BOWLING CARNIVAL.

TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. OPENING DAY. Tlie popularity of bowling' in Taranaki is beyond question, a well-kept green being found in every town in the province. It is not surprising, therefore, to find that the annual tournament arranged by the Taranaki Bowling Centre attracts a large gathering of the devotees of the alluring "kitty." The eleventh of these tournaments commenced yesterday, the three New Plymouth greens being utilised for play. The proceedings commenced by the usual formal welcome to the players, which took place on the town green. At the New Plymouth green, Mr. W. A. Parkinson (president) expressed the pleasure of the centre in welcoming the bowlers. All Taranaki clubs were represented except two. Manaia had been unable to send a team along, and the new elu'b at Auroa had not yet entered for a tournament, but all hoped to see them next year. Mr. Parkinson specially welcomed the members from the Wanganui Centre and the representatives of the Mount Eden Club, Auckland, and hoped that the latter would he able to persuade other Auckland teams to come along to future turnaments. Continuing, Mr. Parkinson said the shadow of war was over the tournament to a very great extent, but nevertheless the centre decided to hold a tournament, which would be a war tournament in the sense that all the proceeds were to be devoted to the patriotic funds.

Mr. M. Eraser, president of the New Plymouth Club, also extended a warm welcome to the bowlers to the New Plymouth green, n nd hoped that they would have an enjoyable time.

Immediately after the opening ceremony those bowlers who were to play at Fitzroy and West End were conveyed to their respective destinations, and the tournament was soon in full swing. An umpire was assigned to each green, Mr J. Tichbon being in charge at West End, Mr. Wi Humphreys at Fitzroy, and Mr. W. Brooking at New Plymouth, while the. secretary (Mr, 0. N, Firth] was in constant touch with the plaj at all the greens, and his arrangements gave the utmost satisfaction. THE COMPETING TEAMS.
