(Recollections of the soaiarmg exploits of Captains Sloeum and Voss, who in their miniature sailing crafts, Spray and Tilikum, made "round the world" voyages, are in a minor degree recalled by a daring cruise undertaken by the mate and one of the «rew of the American schooner Roy Somers, now in port at Sydney Using a boat 16ft in length by about 4ft Oin wide, and '2% ft deep, these venturesome men, both of whom are Norwegians, sailed from Alaska to San Francisco, a distance of 2000 miles. The trip occupied 45 days, representing nn average daily record of 43 miles. It passed without startling incident, and upon arrival at their destination the men had plenty of water and provisions in hand. As a commercial venture, an element which entered largely into the enterprise, the voyage, however, was a failure. The navigators had hopes of making money by exhibiting their small Vessel at the San Francisco Exhibition, but permission to do so was refused by the authorities, so that" practically the men had a profitless journey.
