THE LATE CORPORAL JENNINGS.
HIS CAPTAIN'S APPRECIATION,' Writing from Chrlstehureh to Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., Captain W. E. Furbj saysj—"Now that I have returned to New Zealand convalescent and my memory is coming back, I feel it my duty to write and give you the particulars as far as possible regarding the loss of your son, Corporal E. Jennings, killed in action at Quinn's Post on. or about August i last. '•Your boy left New Zealand under my charge with the main body of the Expeditionary Foive, and was, I consider, one of my best men, one of the best of a particularly good platoon, and his conduct as a soldier both in Egypt and in Gallipoli was exemplary. He participated in the Anzac landing, actions on Walker's Ridge, Krithia and defence of Quinn's Post, where his bray, cry and soldierly qualities earned him his first promotion to corporal. During the night of August 3 he was sleeping in the bomb-proof support of No. 5 subpost at Quinn's with his head alongside the entrance to the communication trench, when an enemy hand grenade, reaching the fire-trench, rolled down the communication and exploded near his head, inflicting injuries which caused his death at the field hospital a few hours after. H,e was injured while asleep, and never knew what hit him. He was buried by one of our chaplains iu the cemetery during the day with other men of the Wellington Regiment : ,wih o fell from time to time during the defence of Anzac. We'were all sorry to lose such a good comrade, and I may state that the loss of your boy was felt quite keenly by all the old men who were left in the company. "I would have written you before, but shortly afterwards we went into Suvla Bay, where I was wounded and lost all my rolls, etc., and it is with only the greatest difficulty that I have got into touch with a few survivors, and am making up the list, as my memory has been affected by recent events. Whilst asking you to accept my deepest sympathy in your great loss, I have to state tihat I can hope to again command such a splendidly-behaved, brave and trustworthy lot of men as those who left with the main body in No. 15 platoon of the Wellington' Infantry Regiment, amongst whom your son was one of the examples for good conduct and efficiency."
