TARURUTANGI.

A PROGRESSIVE DISTRICT. Some few years ago the Tarunitangi Dairy Facto./ was at a low ebb. (lie output in the flush of tho season being but (>'/. boxes daily. Consequently the cost of manufacture was fairly lioavv, and tlic pay-out proportionately small. Owing to bad roads a large "area of country which bad boon settled for many years was precluded from supplying the factory, and the settlers installed separators and manufactured tbeir own butter. There was for many years a prejudice, against receiving home-separ-ator cream at factories, but the directors of the company a few years ago set this aside aud took in home-separated cream. The result has justified the experiment, for Tarunitangi now possesses one of the most prosperous little factories in Taranaki, one which under good management is producing excellent, results. The output in the flush of the season, about Christmas, was 18 boxes, nearly treble what it was five years ago. Some idea of the prosperity of the district may be gleaned from' the fact that the pay-out last month was £I2OO, as against £4OO for the corresponding month four years ago, when the present manager, Mr. E. Street, took ■ charge. The whole of the twenty-nine suppliers now supply home-separated cream, and the high grade of hf> is reached on numerous occasions, which testifies alike to the efficiency of the manager and also to the. care taken by the suppliers in handling the raw produet. All take a pride, in their work, and to further increase the quality of their raw material they have placed orders for cream coolers, which will lower the temperature of the cream and so tend to diminish the acid, which is the chief factor that managers have to contend wit'n in manufacturing from the home-separated article. Mr. Street is doing his bit towards the success of the company by keenly watching its interests. Whilst n large percentage of the imroasc may be due to the 'introduction of home separation increasing the area from which the supply was drawn, it must not be forgotten that th.e farmers of the district are each year going in for more intense cultivation. Greater attention is paid to the provision of winter feed and what can 'be done by judicious cultivation is shown by the line haystacks, grain and root crops that are in evidence. Testing, too, is playing a prominent part, the majority of the suppliers belonging to a testing association, and Mr. Street has charge of this, and the suppliers follow the results of the Babeocl; very closely^
