TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Wellington summer meeting- will lie advanced another stage to-day, when the Wellington Slakes (five furlongs), Wellington Racing Club Handicap (one mile and three furlongs), and the Metropolitan Handicap (six furlongs) will be the principal drawing cards. Tl)e fields promise to be good all round, and winners fairly hard to pick. Naturally a meeting between Desert Gold and Nones, with Hyttus and several smart two-year-olds thrown in, is going to cause some excitement at Trentham to-day. The Haivl-e's Bay filly is such a wonder that she is sura to start, a good favorite, bu'fc Nones may be depended upon to make her move along smartly. Thursday's results caused little surprise, and with the exception of the Cup race the winners were well backed all over the Dominion. Bee p.iid several times over >lhe limit, but the other prices were mostly short. Southerners generally have it thrown Up at them that North Island horses take off most of the plums at southern meetings, but they got it' back with interest when Bee and First Glance led the field home in tiie Wellington Cup on Thursday.

"If Welcome Nugget is beaten they will have to run better than 2.3.T," said a sanguine Hawera punter to this scribe 011 Wednesday. Well, ithey ran much better, and the Taranaki division all had a Bee in their bonnet afterwards. They were badly stung! Tho really "good tiling"—Pammire—duly won 011 Thursday, but it was a close "go." Tetc-a-Tetc ran a wonderful vnce under 9.11. and only just failed to give the English-bred horse 271bs. The journey was made in 1.12 2-5, which almost raises a perspiration when you read of it.

Ararat ran Ladog.uer to half a length over the Anniversary Welter mile in 1.40 011 the opening day. and the Fordell nag made hosts of friends for the Douro Cup to-day. Ladoguer is apparently all they say, and with 7.4 in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap the weightadjuster seems to have taken a risk of being termed lenient. The. Foxton annual meeting, which takes place to-day and mi Mcndav, promises good sport. The Foxton Clip (1J miles) 'will see Rataiia, Maniaroa, and others in action, while the minor events have attracted horses like Tarero, Vladineau, Florist. Lady Louisa. Bivouac, and Red Book. Taranaki horses should run well at the gathering. On the eve of the Whangarei meeting, Coleraine was sold for liflllgns. with his engagements, and three firsts and a second at the meeting would just about put the new owner 011 velvet. Mr. Alee Hall passed through New Plymouth early this week with Denise Or'me and Master Lupin, en route to Auckland. Both horses were reported in good fettle, and should run prominently at the Takapuna meeting. Deputation is in work again at Randwick, and is reported to he looking well after his spell.. Weights for the Egmont Racing Club's summer meeting should appear 011 Monday. and acceptances fall due on Thursday next. Parifonu, who Ki? been jumped lately, is repented to oc rather backward in condition, but may be given a run 011 the flat at Foxton.

Tli» progeny of Hymettus should he able to jall»p fast. It is on record that this sive galloped six furlongs in 1.8 at Epsom (Eng.) before being brought out. to New Zealand. During the four seasons that I'mperador has carried Mr. G. 1) Greenwood's colors, lie has credited the Canterbury sportsman with £CTO in stakes. Oolersine, in his last twelve starts has recorded nine firsts, two seconds, and one unplaced performance. Veronal, Two, and Three Ligirls are to be shipped back to Sydney shortly. Qiiinn's Post has left the Highden stable, and will carry Mr. J. Hathsway's colors in future. Chnkwana is synonymous with consistency, and should pick up a race before the Trentham meeting closes. Those papers which have been publishing the usual "horrible example," viz., the totalisa>tor figures for the various holiday meetings, might go one better and publish the amount of war tax, etc., which the Government, secured thereby, and to that may be added 'the many thousands of quidlets wliich have been added to the patriotic funds by these gatherings.
