FIRES.
A BLAZE IN AUCKLAND. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Yesterday. A lire in Rutland Street early this morning completely gutted the threestory. blick building owned by James Webster, contractor and builder. Webster occupied the ground floor, a local furniture firm had a small quantity of goods on the second floor and the third floor was occupied by the Garrison Artillery Band and Auckland Mounted Rifles Band, which jointly lost music and instruments valuefi at £250. They were partly insured. Webster's insurance on the building, and contents on the first floor was £2500 in the Queensland Office. MOTOR GARAGE BURNED. HEAVY LOSS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, January 1 1. The Mount Cook Motor Company suffered a heavy loss this morning by the complete destruction of their garage at Fairlie by fire. The fire was started by a painter's burning-off lamp which was used oil a e&r body. It set fire to a covering sheet, from which the flames spread with alarming rapidity through tlie building. A couple of cars were rescued and the office books saved, but all else was lo9t, including a first-rate workshop equipment, five car chassis, and a private car. Two large cars had left for the Hermitage not long before the fire started. Insurances total only £9OO, which is only a small proportion of the value. The company will be able to continue the passenger service, as several cars were out on duty, and oilers of other cars hav» twen received. The workshop machinery cac scarcely be replaced till after the war.
