The Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from .the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, January lath. (Note —Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot). Meat —There is a poorer demand for mutton and lamb •on account of large supplies of home-killed coming forward, but the, market is steady and prices are well maintained. Mutton—Canterbury 7Jd per lb for light-weight; medium 7j!d. There are only a few other brands than Canterbury on the market, for which there are no official quotations. Only a small quantity is selling at 7jd to 7Jd; ewes, :t 1 brisk demand. Average price OJd and I sometimes as high as 7jd. ' I
Lamb—Canterbury, two's and four's, 7Jd per lb; second grade,' 7gd; other brands than Canterbury 7fd for best quality. Beef-—New Zealand beef cannot be quoted. Chilled hinds !>d, fores li.Jd. Butter—The marked is liriu but quiet. French butter is expected to arrive again at the beginning of next week. Danish: There is more demand; prices are firmer, per cwt. 15fa to 100s. New Zealand: The spot market is firm; 150s to 1545; unsalted, 158s to }62s; fair to good quality, 144s to 148s. Australian: Steady, 144s to 148s. Siberian: Market quiet but steady, 124s to 130s. Argentine: Quiet. 140s to 1425. Cheese—The market is firm and prices continue to advance. Market closes strong. Canadian: Market firmer; white and colored, per cwt. 07s to 995, exceptionally 100s. New Zealand.: The spot market is practically cleared, therefore prices are more or less nominal. The market is strong in tone owing to 'the business which has been done. White and colored 07s to 98s; exceptionally 90s; English Cheddar, 104s to 106s; Cheshire, 110s to 114s.
Hemp—The market is firm, and prices continue to advance. New Zealand: Good fair, per ton, on spot, £4l 10s; fair, £4O. Manila; New-graded fair, £sl. February to April shipment: New Zealand good fair £4l, fair £39; Manila, new-graded fair £SO. The. output from Manila for :the week was 20,000 bales. Wheat—The market is firm and prices continue to advance. Freight advancing keeps the market steady. Canadian, on spot, 04s Od; January to March ship ment, fi3s 0d; Australian, January to March shipment, steamer 05s, sailor G3a Od. Oats—The market is steady, with a moderate inquiry. Argentine, on ■ spot, 38a Gd;.January to March shipment, 335, Hops—The market is firmer for best quality, but weaker, with less demand for second class quality. English 110s to 140s, Californian 80s to 100s. Wool—The market is firm at the advance. There is great demand in the market.
