ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
THREE CHILDREN" DROWNED. < By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christcliurch, Last Night. Vera, Olive, ami Sam Mumford, aged 10,' 7, ami fi .veal's respectively, were drowned in the lake at Ric;arton racecourse thin afternoon. They were paddling, and slipped over a shelf into Ojbout nine feet of water.
A SOLDIER'S MISHAP. Ashburton, Last Night. The seconci south-bound express this afternoon carried a number of the Tentli Reinforcements, returning to their homes on final leave. When the train was about a mile north of Dromore station, a soldier was noticed to fall from one of the carriages, but owing to the length and speed of the train Ashburton had almost been readied before the guard learned of the accident. Surfacemen were dispatched to the scene, and 'Private J. (loodser, of South Dunedin, was found lying on the grass at the side of the track, with his head badly cut .and several abrasions on' his face and hands. He was conscious then, and complained of injury to his legs. Goodser, who is about 25 years of age. was conveyed to the Ashburton hospital, but was unconscious when he arrived there, lie recovered consciousness later. The injuries will not prove serious.
YOUNG MAN 'DROWNED. Woodville, Jan. IS. A young man named Harold Wood lost his life in the Manawatu river at Ku.meroa this afternoon. He and a younger brother, who were staying with the Jaeksons, went in to bathe, and the elder brother soon got into difficulties and sank. Constable Tanner loft for the scene of the accident with an expert diver for the purpose of recovering the body. f
