A SAD DROWNING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Greymouth, Last Night. A double drowning fatality occurred on the South Beach this afternoon, where a number of people were surf bathing. Constable Dillon, with Nurse Regan, went a considerable distance out and Nurse Regan got into difficulties. Dillon attempted to rescue her, but both were drowned.' Dillon's body lias not been recovered, but the nurse's body was brought in, and artificial restoration was .tried without success. Dillon was a single man, aged 32 years, and had no relatives in New Zealand. Nurse Regan was formerly of Christchurch.

At an inquest to-day concerning the death of John Lawrie, who died from injuries suffered through a fall in the dry dock at Port Chalmers, tho coroner (Mr. J. il. Bartholomew) held that death was due to an accidental fall, but he declined to give any finding on the matter of negligence, as it was not germane to the inquiry. The evidence, he said, was contradictory and unsatisfactory.

TWO LADIES INJURED. •"* A serious accident occurred near the Tawhiti Road railway crossing on Monday evening about 6 o'clock, says ;tlie Hawera Star. Mrs. Win. Appleyard, •formerly residing at Hawera, but who is now a resident of Auckland, and who has been paying a visit to relatives here, was at the time of the accident, driving in a gig, accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Arthur Appleyard, and were returning, to the homo alt Taiporohcmii. The horse, usually a quiet animal, was somewhat restive before starting on the homeward journey, and when near the •Anglican Church took fright at some passing machine. Tho Winkers came oif, and the vehicle was overturned, both occupants being thrown heavily ito the , ground. Mrs. Appleyard, senr., was rendered unconscious and it was found that the injuries to both ladies were no serious us to necessitate removal to the public hospital in the ambulance.
