RAILWAY SOCIETY.

A VISITOR ENTERTAINED. Mr. C. E. Wheeler, of Wellington, who occupies the position of editor of the Railway Review, has been holiday-mak-ing in this district for over a week. On Friday evening last'he was entertained by the members of the Railway Amalgamated Society at a social evening in the Railway Social Hall, and was warmly welcomed by .Air. MeFarlane (vicechairman), who presided, and the branch secretary, Mr. S. G. Smith, both of whom highly praised Mr. Wheelers' efforts as the editor of the Railway Review *

Mr. Wheeler, in a most interesting speech, gave much useful information on the question of the day with wageearners, the present high cost of living. Dealing with conscription, he stoutly maintained the attitude he had taken up Hi the columns of the Review on this question, and that his view was supported was shown by the hearty applause of those present. A short toast was gone through, which consisted of honors to the King, the A.S.R.S., our boys at the front, educational institutions, and the chairman. Mr. Gray, Director of Technical Education, was heartily thanked for his interesting resume of the work of the local Technical College. Although he did not quite know how the college could be of special use to railwaymen, he did know that if twenty railwaymen, or any other body of that number, desired any special course, and a competent instructor for that special work could be obtained, the college could be used, thus showing how wide was the scope of their system, whioli at present seemed to be much misunderstood.

A capital musical programme was given by Jlessrs Gray, McFarlane, Neill, Key, Howlett and Woods; At a further meeting of the local braneli of tlie A.S.R., a resolution was unanimously adopted,, heartily thanking Sir. Wheeler for attending the branch meeting, and expressing the highest appreciation of his work as editor of the Railway Review.
