RUSSIA'S TASK.

THE RUSSIAN ATTACK. A FURIOUS ONSLAUGHT. A SURPRISE FOR THE HUNS. Times and Sydney Sim Services. Received Jan. 15, 0.45 p.m. London, Jan. 15. The Times' correspondent at Petrograd says that prisoners from the southwestern front arc unanimous in their testimony as to the irresistible character of tite Russian attacks in Galicia and Bukovina. They speak oi the Russian bayonet attacks w sian bayonet charges with unfeigned horror. The Russian artillery fire was so overwhelming' that the strongest fortifications were wrecked at Bukovina, and General Mackensen's forts were speedily demolished. On the Strypa the cannonade was so awful that the fire-swept area looked as if it had been subjected to an earthquake, deep pits alternating with mounds of iblown-up earth, and the wire entanglements failed entirely to cheek the onslaught of the Russian infantry. The elaborate character of the AustroGertnan trenches on the Strypa indicates that the enemy confidently expected to occupy them during the entire winter. The soldiers' shelters were literally rooms, furnished with stoves, tables and beds, while the officers' quarters were luxurious, being furnished with washstands, spring mattresses, book cases, and upholstered chairs.

NEW YEAR GREETINGS. MR, LLOYD GEORGE'S MESSAGE. Received Jan. 15, s.f> p.m. Petrograd, Jan, 14, Mr. Lloyd George's message to Russians is as follows: Warmest greetings to our valiant allies. The time is coming soon when both fronts will face the enemy with conditions of complete equality in regard to munitions, and the numerical superiority is on our side.
