THE RIOUW. Bound from New York, the A. and A. Line steamer Rioinv arrived at Melbourne on Monday to replenish 'her bunkers and sailed on Wednesday for Auckland. The vessel is expected to reach Wellington about the 24th inst. The Dutch steamer Riomv, which arrived in Table Bay from New York at daybreak. yesterday morning (says a Cape exchange of November 11) and was berthed at the Loch jetty, was afterwards found to be on fire. The port captain (Captain Leigh) and Lloyd's surveyor (Mr. MeArthur) made an investigation and found that the seat of the fire was in the coal bunkers. The work of discharging the cargo was immediately commenced, and will be continued as far as possible before attempting to suppress the lire. Volumes of smoke were rising from the steamer during the afternoon, and the smoke apparatus from the Central Fire Station was requisitioned, with a request for tW fire engines to stand by. It is stated that when the cargo likely to be damaged by the outbreak had been removed the Clayton process of extinguishing fires on board ship—the pumping of acid on to the burning material—will be applied. The work of discharging the cargo of the Riouw was proceeded with all next day. The smoke issuing from the hold became more dense as the seat of the fire was reached, and the tug Ludwig Wiener was standing by to render assistance with her pumps should the occasion arise. The Eiouw is a steel screw liner of 7526 tons gross register, built in 19H by Messrs McMillan and Co., Ltd., of Dumbarton. She is 450 feet long, 55.1) feet wide, and 27.5 feet deep. Her port of registry is Amsterdam. She is one of a number of vessels which have been prevented from coming through the iPanama Canal by the recent landslide, and is bound for New Zealand and Australian ports with a very valuable general I cargo.
