CHINA.
HOSTILITY TO YUAN. (Times and Sydney Sun Services. London, Jan. \t. 'The Times' correspondent at Peking says the situation is obscured liy the censorship. The Government is moving largo bodies of troops to strategic points with the object of isolating Yunnan and preventing the movement spreading to adjoining provinces. Serious developments are possible. The Taiao, who is a strong character, has great influence in Yunnan, where he has an army 0/ thirty thousand men and ample supplies of arms. Ho has been promised ample financial support. The mountains render the province safe from attack in winter, therefore Yuan 1 is attempting to isolate it and to negotiate for its surrender. Meanwhile the provinces of Szechuan, Kwantuug and Kweichow are notoriously against Yuan. Kwangtung is garrisoned with Yuannancse troops. The Government has a quarter of a million soldiers reputedly loyal in the Y'angtse region eagerly awaiting the Imperial largesse. The arrival of considerable forces at Shanghai has restored confidence, and trade is brisk, but the monarchal proposal has revivified the revolutionary element, and the future is dependent on developments in the south.
