HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce has received this following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, January 8, 1910. (Note: Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot):— Meat.—A good demand'continues at higher prices for all descriptions of frozen meat owing to short supply, although supplies of home-killed have increased. Mutton, —Canterbury, 7'/>d per Vb, any weight. There is only a small quantity available. North Island is not available. Ewes, a very brisk demand. Average price, o%d, but sometimes as high as 7d. Lamb.—The market is firm and prices continue to advance. Canterbury two's and four's 7%d, second grade 1%&. Other than Canterbury not quoted. Beef.—New Zealand cow beef, hinds fi'/id, fores chilled hinds 9'Ad, fores Butter.—The market is firm with an increasing demand. Prices for salted liave recovered 4s to (is, and owing to French export prohibition the iriarket has advanced for imsalted (is to 8s during this week. Danish 154.3 to 158s, Sow Zealand 140s to 150 a, unsalted 154s to 15Ss and up to 100s, fair to good quality 140s to 114s; Australian, 140s up to M(h, unsalted 150s to 1545; Siberian, quiet, 124.S to 1325, Argentine 138s to 140s, unsalted 146s to 1525.
Cheese.—The market is firm and prices continue to advance. Canadian, white and colored 90s, occasionally flSs; English Cheddar, 104b to 100s: Cheshire, 108s to 112s; New Zealand, a good demand. Prices were firm at the close of the market. White and colored, 93s to 94s up to flos. On January 3 the estimated Canadian and United States cheese stocks in London, Liverpool and Bristol were 100,000 boxes, against 171,ODO Iboxes at the same time last year. Now Zealand and Australian cheese stocks, London and Bristol. 14,000 crates against 1(1,000 crates at the same time last year. Hemp.—Manila: The market lias advanced again, largely on account of freight difficulty, and prices for Now Zealand are firmer in sympathy. Enquiry chiefly for early shipment. Manila, new graded, £SO; New Zealand good-fair ,C4O 10s. fair £3B 10s for February to April shipment. Tow: The market is very firm. Business lias been done at first grade £23 10s, second grade £-22 10s, third grade unobtainable flic output from Manila for the week <viiß 22,000 hales. Wheat.—The market remains firm: a good demand continues. Canadian, on spot per quarter, 645; January to March shipment, 62s (id; Australian, January to March shipment, steamer, G4s (Id, sailer 02s (hi. Oats-The market is quiet, but firm Argentine, on snot, per quarter. 33sJanuary to March shipment. 3Ts*oii ' ' Wool.—The market is strong.
