BRILLIANT FRENCH VICTORY. GERMANS ROUTED ON ME.SNIL HEIGHTS, IMPORTANT SET-BACK. TO THE ENEMY. Received Jan. 12, 10,.'!0 p.m. Paris, Jan. 12. In the Champagne district fights of the most violent nature continue. Between the Courtine and llesnil heights the French counter-attacked with the greatest dash. The Germans had no time to fortify their new positions and were utterly unable to defend themselves. A great number surrendered, and those attempting to flee were decimated by the French artillery. It is evident that there were picked Germans among the 00,000 attackers, as the prisoners include many Imperial Guardsmen. • The number of German dead left after the attack and counterattack was enormous, and the numbers of prisoners taken were important.
