EGMONT ENTRIES TO-NIGHT. A final reminder is given to horseowners and trainers that nominations for all events at the Egmont Racing Club's summer meeting eloso to-night at 9 p.m. As the programme advertised in another column shows, fine stakes are 'offered, and judging by the numerous entries which were received for tlio holiday meetings In Taranaki to-night's total should be a record one. Mr. Geo. Morse will do the handicapping, Mr. Ohas. O'Connor the starting, and Mr. \V. H. Harfgill will occupy the judge's box. This trio of officials RU.irantees efficiency in the three main departments of racing, and when it is added that Mr. J. Turton (secretary), and Mr. Alf Morso (caretaker) have their sections of (he work done with their usual thoroughness the February meeting bears every prospect of being a most successful one.

I TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Once upon a time the Taranaki Jockey Club's Autumn meeting was held late in March, and then justified the terms "Autumn." Now that the gathering takes place early in February its appclation is somewhat of a misnomer. Surely "Summer" meeting would be mere appropriate. The handicapping for the second day's races at Stratford caused rather more dissatisfaction than usual, and several owners were rather outspoken when the weights appeared. Mr. J. Chadwick came down from Auckland to frame the second day's handicaps, and as he did not witness the running at New Plymouth, the previous week his task was by no means an easy one. One oi several queer adjustments was that of White Blaze in (he Ladies' Purse. The grey ran a respectable third at New Plymouth with fU3 in the saddle, as against Pnteongn's S.ll and Zola's 7.13. The lmndieap'per then reckoned him only a lib better horse than Mahlsticlc, anil there was only 131b difference between top and bottom-weights in the Ladies' Purse.: Calais and others were harshly treated too. No doubt Mr. Chadwick overlooked the fact that White Blaze ran Welcome Nugget to a length with level weights (list) at the Taranaki Hunt meeting, while Calais has been licked all round the country for months past. Lady Penury and Colerainc scored from big fields on the concluding day at Ellcrslie, and Mr. Chadwick appears to have made a mess of his Whangarei weights through missing their fine form. The following par from the Auckland Star explains itself: The trainers concerned wired to the secretary of the Whangarei Racing Club yesterday: "On account of the'handicapping of Lady Penury and Coleraine, scratch the horses of the following owners:—J. Chisholm (Selection), it. MeMiken (Munster), (}. A. Reid (Worcester), E. Pope (Poropiti, Lady Amai, Gold Fran and Mossman)."
