MOKAU RIVER.

NAVIGATION STOPPED BY FLOODS. The heavy floods of some weeks ago caused the Mokau river, a few miles from the mouth, to be completely blocked by timber, preventing navigation, even by small steamers, to the coal mines. The finances of the Mokau Harbor Board will not permit undertaking the clearance of the river, the cost being estimated at £IOOO. At yesterday's meeting of the Clifton County Council a copy of a resolution passed at the last meeting of the Hoard was read as follows: "That the secretary write to the Minister of Viiblic Works, drawing iiia attention to the unfortunate circumstances of the blocking of the Mokau river through, the heavy floods impeding all navigation, which is a matter of grave concern to all parts of the district. The Board respectfully urge* the Government to undertake the necessary steps to immediately open up the river for navigation, and that a copy of the resolution be sent to the Chambers of Commerce at New Plymouth and Waitara, County Councils of Awalcino and Clifton, Waitara Harbor Board and Borough Council, asking for their support." On the motion of Crs. Piggott and Sander, it was unanimously decided to support the resolution, the chairman remarking that under the circumstances it should not be necessary to have to pa:? a resolution.
