Miss Sterling, of Wellington, is on * brief visit to New Plymouth.

Mr. .T. H. Kirby, the veteran journalist, is seriously ill at Eketahuna. Dr. and Mrs. .Pope, of Palmeraton North, are spending the holiday vaca-. tiou motoring in the Taranaki district.

Two New Plymouth troopers—Privates N. Howell and Rca—who were invalided from England on the Ruahine, will arrive by the mail train to-night.

In the House of Commons Mr. Asquith announced that the Prince of Wales aai been appointed chairman of the War Pensions Statutory Committee. Private H. Morshead, of New Ply. mouth, who was wounded at the Dardanelles, returned by the Ruahine. H« will arrive at Hawera by the train thi» evening.

A London cable states that Lieut. Harold Woodford, of the Berkshire Regiment, son of the lute Commisaioncr at the Solomon Islands, has been killed in France.

Captain W. H. Hawkins, who for same time past has been farming in the Oakura district, left by the mat! train yesterday for Trentham, his services having been accepted by the Defence Department. Mr. W. H. Howlett, of Mangaweka, has been appointed electrical engineer to tho Inglewood Borough Council, in succession to Mr. 0. Hubbarcl, who recently resigned. Some years ago Mr. Howlett was a member of the electrical staff at the New Plymouth power-house.

Petersen (of Inglewood) and Private Lepper (of Omata), who returned by tlie Maheno, arrived in New Plymouth by the mail train last night. They were met by the 'Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) and the acting-chairman of the Patriotic Committee (Mr. C. Carter), Private Lepper is convalescent after au attack of enteric fever, and he went to his home at Omata. 'Private Petersen, who is still suffering from a wound in his right aim received in the fighting at Suvla (Bay early in August, and who also had enteric, was taken to the hospital.

McGregor-Grant, acting-medical superintendent of the Auckland District Hospital, who has received a commission as a captain in the Now Zealand Medical Corps, will prohatoly vacate his position at the hospital on January 14. He was appointed acting-medical super- , intendent in place of Major C. "E. Maguire, who is on the staff of Ko. 1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital, twelve months ago, and has made himself very popular. He volunteered conditionally in September last, offering his services at the conclusion of the twelve months' service for ivhich he had contracted with the Hospital Soard. Or.
