THE ADRIATIC. DESPITE FIGHT FOR MASTERY. OATTARO THE KEY. Received Jan. 5, 8.35 p.m. Rome, Jan. 3. ■A desperate struggle for the mastery of the Adriatic has been raging for a week. Since the commencement of the war Austria has maintained, near Cattaro, a naval base for operations in the Adriatic, the Aegean, and the Mediterranean. Cattaro is only vulnerable from the Montenegrin position of Mount Lowgen, which the Austrians are attacking, and if the Montenegrins, with the Allies, can hold Mount Lowgen they can eventually force the Austrians to abandon Oattaro. AN ATTACK REPULSED. Received Jan. 4 .11.35 p.m. Home, Jan. 4. : A communique states: We repulsed an i attack at San Miehele, inflicting heavy j! losses.
