PATRIOTIC WORK.
ROTOIIUA CONVALESCENT HOME. APPLICATION FOR ASSISTANCE. The Patriotic Committee met last night. Present: Messrs C. Carter (acting-chairman),' J. Paton, W. J. Chaney, L. A. Nolan, J. R. Hill, C. E. Bellringer, C. H. Burgess, J, Clarke, Captain Allen, and the Rev. F. Hales. The following telegram was received from the Minister in Charge of Hospitals (the Hon. G. W. Russell)" The buildings at the convalescent camp for soldiers on Pukeroa Hill, Rotorua, are now completed and will be officially opened within the fortnight. The buildings are exceedingly fine, capable of accommodating easily from three hundred to four hundred men. lam appealing to all patriotic Committees in the North Island to assist in the equipment and furnishing of the buildings, so that every assistance may be given to the military and medical staff to secure the most rapid return possible of the men. to health. Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa, Wanganui, and other districts have contributed towards the fund sums from £IOOO down, and I appeal to your committee to assist our sick and wounded soldiers by a contribution to the fund." A discussion showed a feeling that the Government sliouhl provide for the convalescent home. It was pointed out that this was a national matter and all the money should be provided by the Government. It was decided, before taking action, to ascertain what amount was required to equip the home,'and how much had already been subscribed by Patriotic Committees.
