IN THE AIR.

PLUCKY AVIATORS REWARDED. London, Jan. 1. The Victoria Cross has been awarded to Squadron Commander Bell Davis, and the Distinguished Service Cross to Flight-Lieutenant Smylie. The officers, on November 10, carried out an aircraft raid on Fcrrijk Junction. Smylie, when his machine was damaged, down planed, releasing all his bombs except one. On alighting Smylie set fire to his machine, knowing that the ihomb would destroy it. Suddenly he saw Davis descending close to the burning aeroplane, and, fearing Davis was risking destruction, Smylie ra-n back and exploded the bomb with a pistol bullet at short range. Davis then descended and took up Smylie, despite the near approach of a party of Turks, and returned to an aerodrome. This feat of airmanship has seldom been equalled for skill and gallantry.
