10 (won riiiithe Vlacoupled during the Nugget, Munition, costing the public a the final event, hut was tapes and could not make ground. Various miner imwere effected since last chief of which were ad-"pay-out" windows in the totaliHKr house, thus enabling the money to Be handled more expeditiously. The same old notice boards are in use again this year, possibly because the club docs not care, to incur anything but unavoidable expenditure during the war. But a new and up-to-date jockey's board is absolutely necessary, and an expenditure of about £l5O in the erection of same is certainly warranted. The lawns and various enclosures were in perfect order, the planting of hedges, shrubs, ornamental trees, etc., enhancing the beauty of the grounds. The Wanganui Garrison Band, under the baton of Bandmaster Briggs, played a magnificent programme of music, including many operatic gems. "The Bohemian Girl" (overture), "Pirates of Penzance" (selection), and "Grenadiers" (valse militaire), were items that were greatly enjoyed by a large and appreciative audience. Sergt. Chas. Patterson acted as deputy-stipen-diary steward, but no official verdicts were communicated to the press. It was current gossip that inquiries were held into the running in the Tariki Welter and Railway Hack Handicaps, and the bumping which took place in front, of the stand in the Douglas Handicap was also a matter for the stewards' consideration. The catering for the members of the club was excellent, the luncheon provided by Mrs. Brooking, of Stratford, comparing favorably with any met with on this coast. Loud complaints, however, were voiced by visitors at the total absence of a regular luncheon menu in the public luncheon rooms both "'nside" and "outside." Those who had made long trips to the meeting, many leaving their homes at 6 a.m., certainly deserved more than the fare ("Tea, pies, sandwiches and cakes, Is fid") as advertised in the card. The secretarial duties were ably attended to by Mr. Alf Coleman, both he and his assistants doing everything possible to ensure the success' of the meeting. Mr. Skipwith was in fair form at the barrier. TARIKI WELTER HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sova.; second 1.5 sovs; third 5 sovs from the siakes. Seven furlongs. 1 E. (By "Moturoa,") Tlio ' acceptances received for' the second day of the Stratford annual meeting are fairly numerous, most of the events having filled well. The principal event, the \r„i.— 'Memorial Handicap, has attracted nine horses, including Ineuru, who has gone up lolbs jifor her hollow victory in the Cup. Lady Middleton is engaged v-iM. 8.5, and if caught in the mood would be well able to carry that weight. Crawford 8.7 and Katana 7.10 are not harshly treated. Ineuru and Crawford may strip as fit as anything in the race. A good field of , .i dozen is carded for the Ngaere Handicap, Tree Lucerne, who met with in-I.Tfi-.'fjK'f when finishing fast in the Douglas Handicap, has been risen lib. Play Of)! carries <?.•; as against 8.3, so the top-weight does .--< ---d badlv treated in comparison. Glcnroy, who is reported to be very fit, has got in with 8.2. . With any luck in running Tree Lucerne should run prominently. Six have been paid up for in the Toko Welter, including Syntax 9.8 and Paraoa 9.3. Both have shown winning form lately but the former appears to be the better stayer of the pair. As usual a big crowd will sport silk in the Cardiff Stakes. With no less than twenty engaged much depends on the start. Pergola and Maid o' Cowrie may be well supported in this flutter Onlv a quartette hold their ground in the Makiri Hurdles. Knoeknagow, on New Plymouth form, is be well backed, but Cornice showed a lot of pace on Saturday, and the shorter distance should be all in her favor. Seven is the main in the Strathmore Handicap. No doubt the huge army of punters who lost their money on Bisogne in the Railway Hack Handicap will be out to recover it in this race. Royal Chef is another that will not want for backers. The eight paid up for in the Ladies' Purse are not a very high class lot. White Blaze appears to be the most "classy 1 ' one of the team, and is well up to 10.13, Waioture 10.10, " turday's showing, has nothing to complain of. Punters will bo up against it in the County Hack Handicap, for which thirteen have accepted. Vestalis carried her 7.8 to the end of six furlongs in 1.15 2-5 on ihe first day—a trifle faster than it took them in Ihe Douglas Handicap. It was a good performance, and even 8.10 does not seem a harsh impost on top of it. Florist (8.0) was kept too far out of it in the Tariki Welter, but finished very fast and is likely to command a good following. Munition came into violent contact with the saddling paddock gate on Saturday, but she galloped well for six furlongs in the Midhirst Hack handicap. Provided she is well she may prove dangerous, bu; Vestalis and Florist may he better backed.

The defeat of Ecwi Poto and Depredation at Marton on Saturday came as a surprise to most local punters. Rewi Poto is engaged again to-day, and it will be interesting to see how he polishes off Square Deal at a difference of lib. St. Gate, Moutoa Queen, Bronk Delaval, Denise Orme, Interlude and Depredation will not want for followers in the minor events. The fields all round are very small.

The Auckland Plate lias dwindled down to a duel betweecn the Auckland Cup winner, Balboa, and Eligible. The former is likely to start, favorite. The other events should be of n more excitin;.' nature, and Mulliugar, Soldier, Hysinas, lijorneborg, and Spalperion will' be well supported in their respective engagements.
