CHRISTMAS TRAINS.

APPEAL FOR REDUCED SERVICES. Christchurch, December 29. The following letter lias been addressed to the Minister for Railways by the general secretary of the New Zealand Loco. Engine-drivers', Firemen's ami Cleaners' Association:—"l am directed to draw your attention to the increase ing passenger traffio on Christmas. Day, and to make a request that you will look into the matter of reducing the number of trains run on this day to a minimum. Members of this union consider that every effort should be made to allow them to have this dav in their own homes, and as a section of the publie seem to have no consideration for others and seem intent upon travelling upon this day as long as there are facilities to travel, we feel more than justified in asking you to take some action towards conserving this day for employees as one upon which the public cannot claim our services. Many members of this union look upon this day as being the most precious day of the year to them and their families. Tt is considered that you are to a large extent a party to this deprivation by authorising the running of such a large number of trains on this day. May we therefore request that the train services be considerably reduced on this particular day, and brought into line with the Sunday services?"
