Dr Newton Matthews, of New .Plymouth, who has been serving, with the R.A.M.C. as a lieutenant, has been promoted to captain. Mr M. D. Hornsby, Mayor of Carterton, who was operated upon on Christmas Day, died on New Year's Day, aged 39. He was a son of Mr J. T. X. Hornsby, M.P. for Wairarapa, and was practising as a solicitor in Carterton and hail a brilliant career before him. He occupied the Mayoral chair for his second term.—Press Association. The death occurred on New Year's Day of/Mr. Thomas Wright, of Lepperton, at the age of eighty year*. The late Mr. Wright came to New Zealand in 1883, landing at Dunedin. 'From there he came to Taranaki as one of the military settlers. After a residence of some two years in Xew .Plymouth hr went to live at Lepperton, then a bael;blo;ks settlement, Mr. Wright's Motion being standing bush. He had lived there continuously ever since. All his life he was a prominent figure in North Taranaki Methodist circles, and his death will be keenly regretted by his many friends. He leaves a widow and a family of four daughters and five sous, all grown up.
The death of Mr. W. F. Auckland, an ex-Mayor of Cambridge, occurred suddenly on Wednesday night. Mr. Bu.l;land, who was 73 years of age, was the son of Mr. William Thome Buekland, who was member for Parliament for Raglan in 1885-66, and for Franklin from 1871 to 187"). He was educated privately and at St. John's College. Mr. W. F. Buekland, who was Mayor of Cambridge from 1899. to 1903, and subsequently from 1905 to 1910, had a strong personality and a fine career of public service to his credit. He was member of Parliament for Franklin North from 1534 to 1887, and for Manukau from 1890 to 1893, but the public life by which lie will be best remembered was at Cambridge. Mr. Thomas Colson, who dicit"»tj£ew Plymouth last week, was o)u> of tliejUv est settlers of New Mr. Colson was born on November flL\ 1825, and eame out to New Zealand in \. the barque Eden, arriving in Xew Plymouth in 1850. Shortly after his arrival here he started in business as a baker and confectioner in Currie Street and continued this very successfully for many years. For the past thirty-five years he has lived a retired life. In the early days he had to encounter all the trials and hardships of the pioneer settlers of the province and served »« the Maori war. He was a pioneer member of the Recreation Grounds Board. He leaves one son, Mr. R, D, Colson.
Captain Richardson is relinquishing the office of General Staff Officer to | the Wellington Military District to take a post in the New Zealand Rifle Briglade, the third and fourth battalions of which have been in training at Rangiotu, and will go on active service in due course. Captain Richardson will be succeeded as General Staff Officer at Palmewton North by Captain 1. \V. McDonald, formerly connected with the Senior Cadets. Captain McDonald was at one time Mayor of Lower Hutt. When Lieutenant-Colonel V. H. Smith leaves with the third and fourth battalions of the Rifle Brigade, R&Hgiottt Camp will he under the control of Lieut.Colonel F. T.
