~ SCHOONER'S NARROW ESCAPE. The American four-masted schooner Annie. 'Larson, which has just left Puget Sound for Lyttoiton, with a cargo of lumber, had a narrow escape when proceeding to her loading berth. It seems from news received recently in Sydney that she was bound from Honolulu, and was approaching her destination, when a violent hurricane sprang up, and she was badly disabled. However, she was picked up by the tug Daring, but before the vessel had proceeded far the towline was carried away, and she got adrift again, the vessels parting company. The next vessel to get into touch with hev was the mine-layer Major Ringgold, which succeeded in getting a hawser aboard, but this also parted, and again the schooner went on her way and disappeared. The tug meanwhile had reached port, and reported the occurrence, with the result that a search was inaugurated. Two days later the tug Daring got into company with her, and succeeded in bringing her to Aberdeen. An examination was then made, and it was found that the Annie Larsen had lost her jibboom, her bowsprit was spniii''. both anchors and half her canvas wero- lost.
THE TAKAPUNA. There has been considerable speculation in shipping circles as to what future lies in store for the Takapuna, well known for many years by New Zealahd coastal travellers. Recently the Takapuna was overhauled in Wellington, and now lies anchored in the stream. Advice has come from Gisborne stating that a syndicate in that town, which was formed to float a company to maintain a service between Gisborne and Napier, is negotiating for the purchase of the vessel. According to the Gisborne Times, a conclusion of the negotiations is expected almost immediately. Inquiry at the Wellington office of the Union Company failed to elicit any definite information on the matter, though it is understood that the Takapuna has not yet been sold.
