General Townshend reports that the enemy heavily shelled a fort on the north side of Kut Peninsula on the pursing of Friday, and entered the fort, •but tiiey were driven but, leaving two hundred dead. Fierce fighting for the possession of the fort commenced at midnight. The enemy occupied the baation but retired to their trenches on Christmas morning. The garrison were in excellent spirits, and re-occupied tfte: trenches. The whole division attqeked, and the Turks lost seven hundred. Our losses were 190.
The British troops in Egypt on Christmas Day attacked and dispersed an Arab force near Mersamat, suffering trifling losses.
