Mr. Robert Aron, .1.F., well known in farming circles in Xorth Taranaki, and chairman of the Truti Valley Dairy Co, has been accepted for active service. The Right Hon. Sir J. (i. Ward (Minister of Finance) is still unable to leave his room, though making satisfactory progress towards convalescence.
A Forth cablegram reports that Sir .Tolm Forrest has received many 'congratulations on the completion of hii 50th year of continuous public life. A Sydney mesage states that Mr. Harper chief railway commissioner, who recently returned to New Zealand from a health trip, has been granted further eti tended leave owing to ill-health.
Mrs. W. M. Bolt, senr., widow of tha late Hon. W. M. Bolt, M.L.C., died suddenly on Saturday evening at the residence of her son in Nelson. The deceased. lady was 72 years of age. A London cablegram reports that tha statement of the death of the Hoij. Arthur Stanley was an error. The'mea* sage referred to Mr. Albert Stanley, Labor member for North-west Sta(lord« shire.
Word was received in Hawora yesterday morning of the death of Mrs. T. G. Russell, wife of Mr. T. C Russell, the well-known barrister and solicitor of Christcburch, and mother of Mrs. W. O'Callaghan, of Hawera. A Sydney message states that Private John H. Coulsou, killed in action. was a son of Mis. Jes»ie Coulson, New Zetland, and that Private Samuel who died of wounds, was a New Za*-« lander.
The death of the Hon. R. L, Skeen, Chief Justice of Tonga, took place, on December 10 at a privat» hospital in Auckland. The deceased was well known in Auckland before he went to the Islands being prominent in athletie ••ircles.
Dr. 0. E. Adams, New Zealand Government Astronomer, who has been studying for a year at the Lick Observatory, Cali-. fornla, is returning to the Dominion on. January 27 by the s.s. Maitai, Dr. Adams, while absent in America, gained his D.Sc. (N.Z.) degree. ■Mr. L. M. Moss, 8.A., of Messrs Halliwell, Spratt' and Thomson's staff, baa passed the final for his solicitor's examination. His friends, says the Star, will be glad to hear of his success, and that he had enlisted, and will extend their hearty congratulations and good wishes, Messrs D. A. Harle and A. Chrystal, of New Plymouth, who sat for the recent law examinations, have been successful in completing the LL.B. degree and Law Professional exam, respectively. Mr. Harle is with Mr. A. H. Johnstone and Mr. Chrystal with Messrs Govett and Quil)ia.m. The death occurred at Wellington dtt Monday of Mrs. S. F. Stevenson, widow of the late Mr. J. P. Stevenson, formerly assistant clerk of the House of Representatives, who died in 1876. The late Mrs. Stevenson was sister of the late Mr. W. P. James, Stipendiary Magistrate, and was an elder sister of Mrs. G. Allport, wife of the Secretary for Marine.
Mr. Colin fiilray, the Scottish international and New Zealand representative wing three-quarter, has given up his legal practice at Milton, and leaves immediately for London to offer his services to the Empire. He will rejoin his old regiment at Oxford University, in whieh he held a commission during his term' ol study as New Zealand's Rhodes Scholar.
Messrs 0. A. Harle and A. Chrystal, of New Plymouth, who sat for the recent law examinations, have been advised that they have been successful in completing the L.L.B. degree and Law Professional exam, respectively. Mr. Harle is with Mr. A. H. Johnstone and Mr. Chrystal with Messrs Govety and Quilliam.
A cable has been received in New Ply-, mouth stating that Private Dawson Webster, who was seriously wounded at the Dardanelles, is now working in the Records Office in London. The message also stated that Private Tom Kirkby, who was invalided Home on afrdnnt of illness, is on furlough till the end of January. The cable added '.'both well and happy" and conveyed Christmas wishes.

After the evening service at St. Mary's Church on Sunday, reports the Hawera Star, the. members of the choir met to wish long life and happiness to Miss Kdith Bernard, who lias been a useful member for several years, and who is to be married this week. The Rev. 0. H. Crant Coven expressed the feeling of tlie members in an appropriate speech, and asked her to accept a silver teapot as a slight memento of the time during which she had been associated with them in choir work.
Mr. Alexander .0. Fife, formerly Mcountant for the New Zealand Railways, died at his residence in Hill Street. Wellington, on Sunday afternoon, at the age of 7<i. The late .Mr. Fife received hie training in railway business in the. service of the Scottish North-Eastern Uailway Company, in which lie attained tha position of assistant-manager. On the amalgamation of the company named, with the Caledonian Railway Company he came to New Zealand, and in l-S-ls in* experience in Scotland secured him the appointment of cashier and paymaster to the Canterbury Railways und>r tie Vmviiicial (lovernment, and five yea's lat-r he was promoted to the post of iiejiuntaut.
