An Italian submarine had a thrilling encounter with three Austrian torpedo boats. They first tried to rain the submarine, which dived and rose close to the second torpedo boat. It dived again to avoid ramming and rose fifty yards from the third boat, which fired. The torpedo boat missed the submarine, and the latter also fired and missed. The three torpedo boats closed round, but the submarine dived deep and stole away, Ibut a mine or torpedo seriously damaged her bows. Her compartments saved her and she was repaired under water. The Foreign Office announces that out of 300 bags seized on board the steamer Telligolav, 109 were filled exclusively with 80001b of rubber, consigned to a well-known enemy forwarding agent in Sweden. GERMAN VESSELS PURCHASED. Copenhagen, Dec. 19. A Swedish-American line has practically completed the purchase of two Hamburg-Amerika steamers lying in New York, but is awaiting a guarantee that England will regard the ships as Swedish. f = V. FRENCH LINER SUNK. if ' SMUGGLING OF RUBBER. Received Dec. 20, 5.5 p.m. Paris, Dec. 19. The French liner Djurjura, which was 'steaming with lights out near Malta, was sunk in collision with a British vessel. Splendid boat work saved all on ■board except two. Copenhagen, Dec. 19. Alarm has ibeen occasioned by the action of two shipping companies in stopping the carriage of Danish-American postal parcels. The Danish press points . out that the British discovery of an attempt to smuggle riibber justifies the action.
