TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

WOiRK AT NEW PLYMOUTH. TEACHING BOYS TRADES. PREPARING THE FUTURE FARMER. There was a good attendance of parents and scholars at the annual break-ing-up ceremony in connection with the New Plymouth Technical College, which •was held in the Good Templar Hall yesterday afternoon. Mr. H. Trimble, chairman of the Taranaki Education Board and a member of the Technical College Advisory Board, presided, and there were also present on the piatforni, Miss Trimble and Rev. A. B. Cbappell (member of the Education Board). Mr. A. Gray (Director of Technical Education) and the Technical ■College Staff. Apologies were received for the absence of' Messrs H. J. Okey, M.P., C. H. Burgess (Mayor, of New Plymouth), J. Paton (chairman of the Technical College Advisory Board) and S. G. Smith (chairman of the School Committees' Association). In his opening remarks the chairmaij congratulated the teachers and scholars on the successful results that had been achieved. He impressed on them the need of being thorough in everything they undertook. Thev must strive to be efficient, and he pointed out that this eoultl only be obtained by continual endeavor to do their best. He also urg ed on parents and students the necessity for regular attendances. In the course of an interesting report the 'Director (Mr. A. Gray) stated that the past year had been a record on in every way. The increasing number of students was evidence that the value of this branch of education was becoming recognised. The proper technical work, and the system of work which they were striving to adopt, made for the development of the mind, and also for the training of the hand. Mr Gray said he could not impress too strongly Qn parents the fact that in certain occupations, technical training was an absolute necessity, and experience went to prove that this training should commence as soon as possible after the primary education is finished. The engineering class bad been most success-' fully carried on, and two instructors were necessary. The commercial class also grew so large during 1914 that an additional instructress had to be engaged. The work bad gone on steadily. Woodworking trades had not yet received the attention their importance warranted, but he hoped during the coining year to put it on a more satisfactory basis. There were more students taking up the domestic course than formerly. The idea that the aim of this course was to produce domestic servants was the result of ignorance. One of the aims of this course was to settle the domestic servant problem, by enabling the future housewives to conduct their own homes themselves, and it aimed at raising the whole level of domestic work. Domestic training enabled the young to avoid any mistakes which her mother made. "In the art and art crafts course much good work had been done. Agriculture was an important branch of training, which was inaugurated on a satisfactory basis at th 6 beginning of this year. Through the generosity of Mr. Old, of Sentry Hill, they had been able to use a section of eight acres at Fitzroy, where much sound work had been done. The work had suffered somewhat from the lack of horses and implements, but through the kindness of Mr. G. Colson and Mr. J. Connett. who had lent horses and implements, the difficulty had been ■partially overcome, Next year the Do partment would provide implements, | the work area would be increased to 23 acres. "From enquiries already received from parents, I think the class •will be much larger," added Mr. Gray. "We do not agree with the opinion so often expressed that a country-bred boy should stay in the country and a town■bred boy in the town. I have personal knowledge of boys who have to remain on the farms at work which they detest, when they would have made firsttlass professional men; and we all know that there are plenty of lawyers and other professional men whose chief ambition is to get on the land, where they •would he much happier and far more •useful. Why should a town boy not take up farming? And if he proposes to go on the land, why not give him & training to fit him for it? Parents must think this over." In addition to the practical farm work, the boys of the agriculture class received instruction in chemistry, botany, farm carpentry and enough practical engineering to enable them to deal with ordinary farm machinery. A teachers' class was conducted for the benefit of those young people who proposed to become teachers. The report concluded with reference to athletics and other features of the school.

Short addresses were also given by the Revs. A. B. Cliappcll and S. 6. Osborne, the former stressing the importance of encouraging technical education among the girls aa well as the boys. Every kitchen, be said, was a chemical laboratory. THE PRIZE-LIST. Certificates were presented 'by Mr. Trimble as follows: English Language and Literature, Senior.—Second-class: Whiteford Paton. In the absence of Mr. J. Me.Leod, chairman of the Taranaki Rugby Union, Mr. Garcia presented the football team with n certificate in lieu of the cup, and congratulated the College on having annexed the second junior premiership, a fine performance, inasmuch as many of the competing teams were much heavier, and more experienced.

Tile girls of the College then nrettilv rendered a chorus. ''Wave tin 1 Pennant for our Heroes Brave.'' from the American operetta, ''Pennant.' The voices were beautiful modulated, a feature being the admirable control, which was particularly noticeable in the pianissimo passages. As an encore, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," was givon. The accompaniment was played bv Misses D. George (piano), G. George, K, Julian and Master R. George (violins). After a couple of presentations had been made to the masters, those present adjourned to the Technical College, where they were the guests of the staff and College at afternoon tea. A pleasant and profitable hour was also spent in wandering through the class rooms examining the work of the various classes, and very favorable comment was expressed on the quality of the work.
