A Melbourne cable states that Colonel G. Irving, chief of 'the General Staff, has been appointed to the ■ command of the troops in Egypt.
A ljondon cable.announces the death ot Lord Alverstone, at the age of 73 years. He was Lord Chief Justice of Kngland from 1000 to 1914.
The Auckland Hospital Board has accepted the resignation of Dr. A, McG. Grant, acting-medical superintendent, who is going to the front. Captain Cardale, late of, Taranaki chief mounted instructor, is at present in the Greytown Hospital, suffering from a nervous breakdown.
Dr. H. Christie, of Wanganui, lias been appointed to a position as surgeon in ono of the base hospitals in Cairo for a, period of six months. Mr. F. K. TurrhuU, of Wanganui, late of New 'Plymouth, has recovered from his wounds', and will shortly be oil active service again.
Captain F. H. Latapen, formerly attaclied to the Permanent Staff in TaranaKi, was on September 14 transferred for duty with the New Zealand Infantry Brigade at the front. ■ Constable B. Smythe, who l>a3 been stationed at New Plymouth for the past four years, has resigned from the police force. He has offered his services to the Defence Department.
Mr. H. Weston, of Waitara, has received a cable from his son Carl,' to the effect that he is at, present in a hospital In Birmingham, but is getting on well. Trooper Weston went away with llto /irst Expeditionary Force, and until attacked with a mild fever-had not had a day's illness while on atetiye service. '• His ExcoWncy the Governor lies f»rwarded a cable message as follows to the Countess of Glasgow relativo to the death of- the Earl of Glasgow, a former Governor of New Zealand: "'Myself, trie Government, and the people cf New Zealand desivo to cxpreeg our deep sympathy witli you in the sad loss which you have sustained."
Mr. E. ,T. Arlaw, of Cliristehlirch, well known throughout New Zetland in connection with Messrs W, Weddel and Co.'s business, hus resigned his position With that firm and accepted the managership for New Zealand for Messrs S: V. Nevanas and Cu., the well-known English importers of frozen meat, wool, dairy produce, etc. Miss Lennon and Miss Harle, who, after two years' training, are leaving the West End School, were yesterday each presented with a copy of Scott's ami Rents' poetical works. During the year Miss Lennon has held a reading club with the senior girls of the school, and the club yesterday took the opportunity of thanking Miss Lennon for her I rouble and presented her with a) volume of Uiieiley's poems. . Mr. C. A. il. Randrup, who has been for the last two'and a-half years district. manager for Taranaki for the International Harvester Company, has received notice of transfer to Dunriltn, and leaves in time for the southern harvest.' He will be succeeded in-Taranaki by Mr. G. A. Laird, of North Auckland, who has already arrived, and will have his headquarters at Hawera,
