TARANAKI HOSPITAL BOARD.

THE MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs F. C. J. Bellringer (chairman), G. V. Tate, D. H. McDonald, A. H. Hilcorffffe, J. R. Hill, D. McAllum, M. J. Macßeynolds, E. Maxwell, A. E. Sykes and Mrs. Dockriil. An apology for absence was received from Mr. J. Brown, WORK AT THE HOSPITAL. The medical superintendent of the hospital (Dr. E. A. Walker) reported that the number of patients admitted during November was 60. Sixty-eight patients were discharged, three died, and 4;> remained in the institution. The highest number of patients in the hospital for one day was 03. * The number bf operations was 43. The examinations for the hospital certificates were held, and Nurses Coutts, Fraser, Gill, filentworth and Muir passed. Cases of diphtheria, measles and scarlet fever had been- treated in the isola-tion block.

OLD PEOPLE'S HOME. The matron of the Old People's Home (Mrs. A. Bayly) reported that during the past month everything had been progressing very favorably. The supplies had been very good, and discipline had been excellent, with the exception of one case, which was dealt with by the chairman. There was one departure during the month, leaving 27 males and 4 iemales in the home.

PUBLIC HEALTH. The inspector (Mr. A. H. Kendall) .reported that during the past month he had visited Inglewood, 'Rahotu, Opunake, Tikorangi, Okato, Urenui, Warea and Waitara. Four cases of diphtheria were reported in the Clifton county, also one at Waitara and one at Urenui, and one case of scarlet fever at New Plymouth. Disinfections were carried out at all premises requiring such, and also at premises where phthisis patients had died and resided, also of vehicles which had conveyed patients to hospital, During the month he visited bakers, butchers and fishmongers' premises, and places used for the sale of milk. He also visited, in accordance with instructions, several of the grocers' shops and checked the reputed weight of sugar, flour, oatmeal, bread, tea, and other foods, and had taken several samples of. milk for analysis from street, shop and farm. Three prosecutions were pending.

GENERAL. A motion, moved by Mr. Macßeynolds and seconded by Mr. McDonald, was carried that the salary of the health inspector should be increased to #250 a year with travelling expenses. There was some discussion on the question of what amount should be allowed for travelling expenses, and eventually Mr. McAllum gave notice of motion to rescind the resolution. A circular letter was received from the Public Health Department urging upon the Board the necessity for exercising economy wherever possible in view of the financial position created by the war. —The letter was received. The following names were added to the probationers' list:—Misses Elizabeth L. C. Berry (Christchurch), Ethel B. Bernard (New Plymouth), Ruby H. Law (Dargaville), Ivy M. Fraser (Da'rgaville), Lily F. Cowie (Wanganui) and Eila M. Francis (New Plymouth).
