BOWLING.

NEW (PLYMOUTH RETAINS BANNER. AN JDXCITJNG FINISH. Favored with ideal bowling weather, Hawera yesterday made a splendid effort to wrest the banner from New Plymouth (the holders), interest being maintained right up to the last head of Hair's and A. iK. Smart's rinks, the result of the'match depending on the final deliveries of the two skips mentioned, Hall scoring 3 and Smart I. The hero of the day was H. Smart, who defeated Parfclnson by 24 points, and the surprise of the match was A. K. Smart's defeat by 20 points. The last head at the latter's rink was twice "burnt," but Smart scored with his last "delivery, which was perfect in direction and strength. At one stage of the final Tieads of the game the result looked a foregone conclusion for Hawera, and fie vision of a triumphant return with the coveted trophy seemed about to be realised, but it was

not to be. Hawera undoubtedly played an excellent game, and the fact that they only lost by two points shows this.

The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea, and, before leaving, Mr. Parkinson, on their behalf, said Hawera had been pleased to give New Plymouth such a good game, and though disappointed at the result, congratulated their opponents on their victory. Three cheers were then exchanged and the visitors made a hasty departure to catch the train.

Details of the scores are as follow, New Plymouth being mentioned first in each ease:—

Goldwater, Luseombe, Harrison, Morey (s) IS; v. Orabb, J. Hicks, Tarrant, Hudson (s) 18. Fookes, Ford, Firth, H. Smart (s), 35; v. Tong, Hodge, A. Robertson, Parkinson (s) 11. C. T. Rundle, Woolley, S. Rundle, Hall (s) 18 v. Robb, Burgess, Syme, Hollard (a) 17. Wood, Blundell, Medley, A. K. Smart (s) 10 v. Spence, McPhillips, Curtis, Foy (s) 30.
