AUSTRALIA. THE RECRUITING SCHEME. Melbourne, Dec. 15. The military authorities, in addition to stiffening the tests, propose holding a monthly medical examination in the camps in order that as few men as possible may be returned from Egvpt as unfit. Letters of appeal and attestation forms for the new recruiting campaign are available. The ground work of the scheme is accomplished, and the organisers nri' confident of success. '.R'XITION WORK, Melbourne, Dec. 13, Tii? Defence Department states that Australian manufacturers are able to turn out full infantry equipment. The Department has. designed and produced a purely Australian equipment. The 15,000 sets issued were so satisfactory that a further 100,000 sets have been ordered. Twenty-five per cent, of the rifles used by the Expeditionary Force are manufactured at Lithgow, and the manufacture of machine-guns will shortly be undertaken.

Since the war 31,027 horses have been obtained, 28,988 were purchased at a cost of £560,968, and the. remaining 2638 were donated. Of these 24,270 have been sent with the forces. Two thousand five hundred vehicles, 10,000 sets of harness, and 15,000 sets of saddlery have been provided.
