Sir Joseph Ward, Minister for Finance, is confined to his room owing to a cold.
Mr. Lionel Teed, of New Plymouth, has been successful in passing his final pharmacy examinations. Mr. .T. W. Buehler, assistant teacher at Urcnui, who left on Monday last to join tlie 9th Reinforcements, was yesterday granted leave of absence. Mr. Hugh Mowlem, son of the'late Captain Mowlem, and a resident of Feilding, died suddenly at the Palmcrston Hospital on Sunday. The Rev. Dr. Weeks, vicar-elect of the. Nelson Cathedral, is expected to reach Wellington On Saturday on hia way from England to Nelson. Mr. James Muir, a veteran of the Maori War, when he was a sergeant in the Waikato Rangers, died at Papakura, on Saturday. At the meeting of the Tarnaaki Hospital Board yesterday the chairman reported that the secretary (Mr. C. M. Lepper) had considerably improved in health, and hoped to resume his duties next week.
Mr. G. P. Armstrong, late* of Taranaki, who has been on an extended visit to California, is returning by the Niagara, and will then proceed to Melbourne.
Mr. Val Duff, commercial director at £he Technical College, resigned his position at yesterday's meeting of the Education Board, in order to join the staff <>f Mr. Hugh Baily. The Board accepted the resignation with regret and steps will be taken to fill the vacancy.
At yesterday's meeting of the Taranaki Education Board, the following appointments to school committees were made:—Oakura: Messrs. H. Gordon and J. C. Gower in place of Messrs. J. C. Sumner and S. George; Huiroa: H. B. Kidd in placo of W. Philips; Hurford: F. Higgins and Waldan in place of Messrs. A. Wood and C, Jensen; and Central: Mr. C. T. Mills in place of Rev. T. H, Roseveare. All resigned. The Taranaki men invalided home on the Tahiti, due at Wellington about December 27th, are;— Privates Frank Hagenson (Fitzrov), A. W. Mason (New Plymouth), H. G. Ward (Waverlevl. J. O. Carlson (Eltham), L. A. Walker (Tariki), and Wharemata Turi (Opunake).
The death occurred at Wellington Hov pital on Tuesday, from pleurisy and pneumonia, of Mr. Percy Joyce, a clerk employed with the Base Records, Defence Department, Wellington. Deceased was born in Oreymoutli, where his father was a prominent brewer in the early days, and his brother is one of Greyinoutn's leading solicitors. Mrs. R. J. Hogg, a well-known resident of Midhiist, who has offered her services and has been accepted as a memoer of the Volunteer Sisterhood, for work In the military Hospitals at the front, is to be publicly farewelled by the resident* of Midhirst and district at a social on Monday next. Mrs. Hogg, wtioec hu«band bas been for several years secretary to the Midhirst Dairy Company, iu the fifth member of her family to lenal aid to the Empire, in the present crisis, four brothers being already on netiv* service.
