WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) On .Friday evening the recruits of the Eleventh Reinforcements were tendered a social in the Clifton Hall. As on previous similar occasions there was u large attendance to bid farewell to the departing men. During an interval in the dancing, his Worship the Mayor, in asking the men to accept a token of the good wishes of the North Taranaki Patriotic League, again appealed to the eligible men to be up and doing. The speaker said he regretted that the number of men from the town itself was so small, and urged others to do their duty, A noble example was set by Messrs J, and T. McEldowney, .T. Moore, and J. Lowe, each of whom had left his farm in the care of neighbors while he answered the call. Men were sadly and badly need.ed at once, and he trusted there would be no further hanging l)ac.K. On behalf of the League he asked Messrs J. McEldowney, T. McEldowney,. J. Moore, M. Mallett, .T. Lowe, I!. Godwin, A. Wright, and W. Chapman to accept a present as a small token of the appreciation of the district. In referring to recruit W. Chapman his Worship said that he was the third member of the family to volunteer, and such a sacrifice in one family should surely be an incentive to others. Dancing was indulged in till midnight, when "Auld Lang Syne" and the National Anthem were sung. The music was provided by Miss Carr's orchestra, Mr. Fowler, and Mr. Peek. Songs were given by Mrs. Nosworthy, Mr. Fox, and Tessa and Myrtle Langman. On Monday morning a number of people assembled at the station to farewell the members of the Eleventh 'Reinforcements. His Worship the Mayor addressed the men, wishing them, on behalf of the town and district, Godspeed and a safe return. The municipal band turned out and rendered appropriate music. Captain Thomson on Friday evening tendered his resignation to the Harbor Board. He is taking up a position in Cl.ristclmrch.
