CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS.
HALLWAY FARES DEARER. EXCURSION TICKETS AT SEA. In order to meet the extra traffic which is anticipated during the holidays the customary arrangements have !>ee» made by the Railway Department regarding the issue of excursion tickets. These will be obtainable at every railWay station from December 17 to January o, and will he available for the return journey up to and including February 17. Hitherto the excursion fares have been charged on a basis of 2d per mile for first-class and 1 l-3d per ,mile for second-class accommodation. Ihis year the fares will be slightly increased by the imposition of a, tax of 81-3 per cent., provided for in the i*e* cent Budget. Thus the fares will work out roughly at 21-5 d per mile for firstand H/ 2 d per mile for secondclass, the mileage being counted one way only. Reduced fares will also be obtainable on the Northern Steamship Company's boats, the company having completed arrangements for the issue of excursion tickets between December 13 ami January 4.
