Some of the recruittag officers did not take off their clothes for four days. Many recruits have gone straight to the umy. Several officers announce they have beaten all record*. Apart from Lorg. Derby's group scheme 8 per cent, enlisted at the White City. They were, under 30 years and apparently not married. : Nine hundred night-shifters at the Woolwich Arsenal were sworn in. On Friday night there were left a thousand gathered at the Lambeth Town Ball at midnight, waiting to be signed on. There were similar scenes is the pro*igcia| centres.

(St. Souplet is on the north side of the Bazancourt-Challerange railway, which has been of great value to the German forces as a means of supply and of transferring troops rapidly to any threatened point. When a big offensive was undertaken at the end of September the French managed to T each within two miles of this railway at Tahure Butte, which is a few miles further east than St! Souplet. Now they must be very close to the line, close enough to stop the traffic, if not actually to capture it.)
