Corporal J. C. Sumner is visiting New Plymouth on leave. A Sydney cablegram reports that C. G. Macartney, the international crick* eter, has enlisted. Cr. M. Fleming has been re-elect-ed unopposed as chairman of the Egmont County Council. Mr. T. M. Philips has been re-elected chairman of the Waimate West County Council.
Mr, Henry Morgan (clerk of the Court at Marton) lias been appointed clerk of the Hawcra Magistrate's Court, vice Mr. D, W. Mason, promoted to Dune din. Mr. R. J. Eanies, managing editor of the Wliangarei Advocate, liU4 been spending a few days in New Plymouth, and returns north by to-morrow's boat. The Rev. Hugh Black, who was offered the position of successor to the Rey. R. J, Campbell at the City Temple, London, has* declined the offer on the ground that America demands his services. Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M., who is to take up magisterial duties in Hawcra district during the absence of Mr. Kenrick, arrived in Hawera. on Saturday evening,
Mr. Arthur M. Munro, M.A., of St. John's College, Oxford, Assistant Science Master at the Wellington Technical College, lias been appointed head science master at King's College, Auckland. Chaplain-Captain Rev. W. R. Hutchinson, of Maraekakaho, Hawke's Bay, has been appointed by the Defence Department, Presbyterian Chaplain to the 9th Reinforcements.
Mr. Jas. Young, a well known coastal resident and former member of the Taranaki Education Board, will be a candidate for the seat on the Board rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr. A. M. Bradbury. Mr. W. Brown, who for four years has been a member of Messrs Norton and Capleit's staff, has (says the Star), gone to England with the intention of offering his services to the Home Government in the Motor Transport Corps. Previous to leaving Hawera he was made a suitable presentation from the firm and staff. Mr. Brown was an active member of the Hawera Citizens' Band,
The death occurred at Napier on Friday morning of Mr. K. \Y. Dorset, for many years secretary of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society. Deceased was bom in Wellington in 1840, and followed sheepfarming in the Wairarapa, being a prominent breeder of Romney Marsh sheep. Ho leaves a widow and two sons.
In the event of their lc?ng no autumn session, it is the intention of Mr. U. Mc(Tallinn, M.P., to pay a visit to Kgvpt, and, if possible, Malta and Gallipoli.'before Parliament reassembles at the' end of June. Speaking to a Marlborout.'li Express reporter, Mr. McCallum -aid that lie had been asked by members of hia constituency who bad sons doing their duty at the front if lie had thought of going. He would, of course, go at his own expense, and his object would be mainly to look after the interests of the Marlborough men.
The death occurred at the Wellington Hospital on Thursday evening of Trooper Dennis Patrick Burke, son of Mr. and Mr*. Thomas Burke, Tasman Street, Wellington. The deceased, who was a native of Wellington, was in the employ ol the Railway Department for many years, and was a prominent figure in football circles prior to the outbreak of war. He went to Samoa with the First Expeditionary Force, and on his return to Wellington he again volunteered for active service. He had been in eamp preparing to leave with the next reinforcement draft, but on Thursday afternoon was admitted to the district hospital to undergo an operation for tonsilitis. and succumbed during the operati°n, Tbtf deceased trooper, was only ' years of age.
