Some striking figures are quoted in a Wellington paper to show the utter inadequacy of tlie present system of election to obtain even reasonably fair representation in Parliament |of the parties in the country. In the Taranaki and Wellington provincial districts, - where there are twenty constituencies, at the last general election, 64,906 votes were cast for Government candidates and 65,910 for Opposition candidates, but the Government, though in a minority of over a thousand in this wide district, secured fourteen seats and the Opposition only si.v. In Canterbury and Westland, on the other band, where there are sixteen constituencies, 41,642 votes were polled for Government candidates and 65,933 for the Opposition, but the Government secured only two seats while the Opposition secured The figures seem to bear analysis, and the results certainly are a little startling.
