TECHNICAL COLLEGE.
FIRST ANNUAL SPORTS. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Some idea of the strides made by the Now Plymouth Technical College during Ihe past few years could be gauged by f.lic fine showing made by the bovs at (lie first si nuiial sports'in eonueetion with the College, which were held at the Recreation Grounds yesterday. These were organised and managed .-'olelv by the stall' of (lie school, assisted by tli'e pupils, and their success was mi' pronounced that they are certain (o he classed in future as on,- of the annual functions of the College. Considering that it was their fust, -p,tliciin-, llr. Cray (the director) and Ids stall' are deserving of the highest commendation for the completeness of the nrrangeliicnts. Time was limited, the events bavin"' to be completed so as to ensure tin' country lads—of whom lliore are n_ considerable number— catching the 'afternoon train, and so well up lo (he mark were the officials that there are only two or three events to complete and these will probably be concluded to-day. Tim officials all worked well. They comprised:—Starter. Mr. A. Gray: judges, Messrs F. VV. Sandford and Skolton; marksmen, Messrs Kirkpatriek and Sergei; timekeeper, Mr."Moore. Mr. W. Badley as lion, secretary and Mr. Duff as result official are deserving of n special word of praise. On the whole, tlie sports were good, the boys entered into the competitions with zest, and there were close finishes. The championship was annexed by (!. F. Fuller/and ho. will be the first sports champion of I lie school. He put up a flue performance, scoring 2(1 points, viz., three firsts, four seconds, and a third, being placed in every event. W. Badley lo points (four firsts, ,i second, and a third). G'he attendance was onlv fair, considering Hint the weather 'was so fine. The sports, too, were well worthy of patronage. Possibly after such an'auspicious initiation more interest will be taken by parents and others in future gatherings. The girls of the College added their quota to the afternoon's enjoyment, for the afternoon tea was in their charge and a dainty repast thev provided too, charmingly laid under the shade of the trees near the lake. Miss Mikkle-en simorviscd Hie arrangements, assisted Inother members of the stall', including Misses Eiso, Still, and Mcn/ies. A bevy of girls, prettily attired in white dresses and apron* and mob caps, flitted gracefully from table to table quickly attending to the wauls of patrons. A I beautiful programme of music gratuitously rendered by Mrs. George's Orchestra from the band rotunda ,ua.ve the | necessary touch to a really charming scene. The piano was lent for the occasion by Mr. Hon'mann. The YW.iinded Soldiers' Fund will benefit to the extent of over £5 from the afternoon' tea. Results of the euuits:
