WANTED AT GALIPOLI.
GIFTS FOR THE SOLDIERS. AN INDICATION OF REQUIREMENTS. A cablegram received by the Defence Minister from Colonel Charters, the officer commanding the New Zealand base at Alexandria, mentions the successful delivery of gifts intended for the troops at the front. The message gives also some indication of the requirements of the men in the trenches. "In future," says Colonel Charters, "cases for troops at the front should not exceed 801b gross weight, owing to difficulty of mule transport in the field. "Gifts sent by next military transports should consist of warm clothing suitable for soldiers at the front.
"Cornflour, arrowroot, Glaxo, and foods of a similar kind, also curry powder, in tins if possible, are in continual demand at the front, and are difficult of obtaining locally. Oatmeal, if sent next January, will be useful to military hospitals and at the front. "Red Cross goods by P. and O. steamers are arriving regularly, and are quite satisfactory. They are delivered to the New Zealand Stationary Hospital on arrival.
"Major Wylie was given 50 bales to re-equip No. 1 Stationary Hospital after the accident to the transport Marquette."
