IS CONSCRIPTION COMING? LAST CHANCE FOR VOLUNTKEIte. EXAMPLE OF DOMINIONS. Times and Sydney Sun Services. Received Dec. 8, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 7. Tlie press in earnestly appealing to young men to come forward to save Lord Derby's campaign before it is too late, pointing out that tiie whole world 19 watching the result, the enemy closely and anxiously. W,eek-end recruiting' has increased, but there is an undue proportion of married men. In London canvassers are making ceaseless efforts to sweep in the "excusers" during the remaining days. The Evening Standard says that Lord Derby and the Labor leaders of the country are not satisfied, and the paper points to the magnificent results in the Dominions, which provide an object lesson to the young men of Britain. The Daily Mail says that this is the last chance for voluntarism, and asks IWill the young men of Britain be worthy!' From the position that Britain holds to-day they can see that the reverses at Bagdad and at the Dardanelles are due to insufficient strength, and it rests with them whether they will fight as volunteers or as conscripts. If they come forward now they may preserve voluntarism.
LORD DERBY'S SCHEME. THE CHRONICLE SAYS A MUDDLE. London, Deo. 7. The Daily Chronicle says: "There is a growing feeling that tlie politicians' time limit to Lord Derby's scheme ought to be extended to December 31. There has been a considerable muddle. We don't like to suggest that this is the ■Machiavellian handiwork of conseriptionist officials, but unless Lord Derby again brings common sense and business instinct to bear no convinced anti-con-scriptionist is going to regard the proceedings us a fair test of the voluntary system."
