A few brief comments were made by Mr. Massey to a Post representative this afternoon on tlie National Register figures. "I consider the results of thf war census exceedingly satisfactory," he said, "and creditable to the men of New Zealand. I had perfect confidence that \vhen the position was put to them they would do the right thing, and I am satisfied now that they will come forward when wanted, and so far as I am able to judge a very Urge pro* portion of those willing will foe re* quired."

Speaking of the 34,386 not prepared to volunteer for the expeditionary force nor serve in a civil capacity, Mr. Massey said: ''lt must be remenibered that a number of them were men with families and in farms or businesses iii a small way, and to leave in existing condition* perhaps would mean ruin. When the actual position was known he believed it. would j be found that this position applied to the largest proportion of that number. The registration cards gave very little room for explanations of this kind."
