MUNICIPAL ECONOMY.
,^, TBKNCHES IN DEVON STREET, After having been severely cut up by the necessary process of laying the tramrails, Devon Street central has been left alone for the past week or two, with the result that the latest coating has settled down and the surface of the street has been in very good condition, and comparatively free from dust. But the pick-axe could not be withheld very long, for yesterday saw a number of workman attack a splendid piece of roadway and gave the public a good idea of what trenches look like. "Ko doubt this is necessary work," remarked a citizen who pointed this cut to a News reporter, "but why could it not have been done before instead of waiting until the street was formed.'' One might picture two councillors thus: — First Councillor: "Here's a fine-looking street.'' Second Ditto: "You're right. What's the best thing to do with it?" "Let's have it dug up for a drain." "But wouldn't it be proper to pave it first?" "Of course: T thought you would understand that. Then, after it is paved and a drain put in, we'll have it repaved." "All in readiness to be dug up again for the gas pipe? I see you understand the principles of municipal economy. And after ,we have had it repaved for the second time, then what?" "Well, then, it will be ready for widening. There's nothing T admire so much as system in the care and improvement of our roadways."
