THE DARDANELLES
Times and Sydney Sun Services. London, Dee 8 The following is a copy of a telegram sent on November 8 from the general headquarters in the Mediterranean to the War Office when the Suvla operations were first planned. ''The information which was subsequently verified, indicated that there was a considerable amount of water in the Biyuk-Ahnfarta valley and on the Suvla plain, but complete preparations, which the telegram details, were made to guard against the risks of trusting to the water or of inability speedily to develop the local resources." -Dealing with the arrangements at Anznc, the telegram states that a highlevel reservoir had been built with .10,000 gallons capacity, and a pipe system of distribution to tanks. A stationary engine which was capable of filling the reservoir was brought from Egypt, but broke down at one period. A further supply was to be secured from lighters and water-ships. These were under naval control and no details were available, so they arranged that the army's responsibility be confined to emptying the lighters and distributing the water to tue troops, the Navy undertaking the replacing of empties with full ones. The Admiral's arrangements were considered adequate to provide a full supply. Further, they obtained ship tanks and troughs with a capacity of 19,"),000 gallons for erection on the beach or for use at local wells, and also 300 water buckets and six pumps.
