BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
THE PAST MONTH'S WORK. UNSATISFACTORY FOOTPATHS. The Works Committee of the Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (chairman), and Crs. L. M. Montea'th, J. S. S. Medlev, J. Hayden, F. E. Wilson. A. H. Johnstone. W. A. Colli*, W. F. Short, F. J. Hill, J T. Maunix, and A. E. Watkins. The borough engineer (Mr. E. 0. Clayton) submitted his monthly report as follows: Tram Route.—During the greater part of the past month the weather was wet and showery, which practically prevented tarring and sanding work being carried out, but very good progress has been made on the other class of work. The high bank between the hotel at Moturoa and terminus has been cut back so as to give the 12-I't space between the tram line and bank. We were successful in obtaining on hire the Inglewood engine and scarifier, and it is now fully occupied in rolling and breaking up the metal. Forebay.—The repairs recently carried out here have been successful in stopping the serious leakage. Dam at Headworks.—Men are at present engaged in making the necessary alterations to screen, and certain work has been done towards dealing with the leakage. Baths.—The month under review has not been favorable for a good attendance, the weather being cold anil .wet. The following are the returns for November: —Men 413, ladies 320, private baths 74. Receipts for swimming bath £"i 6s Id, private baths £3 3s. ■Borough Footpaths—The footpaths throughout the borough are generally in a very unsatisfactory state, and reqnire early attention. I would especially recommend that the paths in Devon Street be made good, particularly in the business portion, as soon as circumstances permit. Permits.—The value and number of permits applied for during "November was £3084 and eleven respectively. General.—The general maintenance work has been attended to and a number of small jobs as authorised have been done. As formerly mentioned it is my intention to place the work of maintenance on a more satisfactory footing as soon as circumstances permit and do away with the present overlapping which frequently occurs. The report was received.
