TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.
THE MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Teachers' Institute was held at New Plymouth on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Dowling presided over a good attendance. Three new members were elected, bringing the membership up to 163 active members and six honorary members. Considerable discussion took place on the conditions under which scholarships are awarded, and the executive was instructed 1 to go into the matter further, and to report to the next meeting of the Institute.
Several letters concerning the censoring of pictures were received. The secretary reported that this question had been considered by the executive, who had asked Mr. A. Erskine, of Wellington, to represent the Institute at the recent conference in Wellington. Mrs. Dowling, Miss E. Andrews, and Mr. 6. Pope were nominated as delegates to the Easter conference. Others may be nominated by sending nominations to the secretary by December 15. It was decided to forward the. following remit to the conference: "That all relieving teachers should be paid a fixed salary." On the suggestion of Mrs. Dowling, the secretary was instructed to write to the conveners of discussion centres asking them to hold meetings to consider the proposed changes to the constitution of the New Zealand Education Institute. It was decided, to nominate Mr. Endey (Otago) for the position of President of the New Zealand Educational Institute.
