OPUNAKE.

HARBOR BOARD'S MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The ordinary monthly meeting of the Harbor Board was held in the secretary's office on Thursday afternoon. Present: Messrs T. J. Hughson (chairman), R. Malcolm, J, Macfie, R. Lambie, C. H. Hurst, A. H. Moore, and C. A. Woolford. The chairman welcomed the new member appointed by the County Council (Mr. Woolford), and hoped that he would assist them to overcome the many difficulties tliey had to contend against.

Mr. Woolford returned thanks and said he was prepared to assist the majority to obtain any improvement decided upon. Messrs 'Barton and Smart, solicitors, Hawera, who were negotiating for the Board in the flotation of a loan at Dunedin, notified that the prospectus was prepared and compiled by them after expenditure of considerable time and money.

It was decided to hold over consideration till next meeting. The clerk was authorised to issue summonses for all overdue rents.

The Board went into «committee on financial matters, and on resuming it wa.« feported that the Finance Committee be authorised to obtain the consent of the Finance Minister to facilitatethe raising of a loan.

Mr. Cyrus Williams, engineer, wrote that the only item on his original estimate that would be necessary to increase would be the rate of interest.

It is reported from an authoritative source that the Finance Minister has replied to the Opunake Harbor Board's application for consent to raise a loan "That under the present circumstances it would not be advisable to raise a loan, and the consent to do so cannot at present be given." GENERAL. As an outcome of the recent complaints regarding larrikinism at Rahotu, a youth named Richard Hill was convicted and fined a nominal sum for breaking a window in Mr. Sanders' house on (Sunday, Sept. 24. Constable O'Neill prosecuted, and Mr. Spence appeared for accused who pleaded guilty. Dr. Barron lias received word from the Defence Department to report for active service within a few weeks. He will receive the rank of Surgeon-Captain.
