THE QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the TmnaM Chamber of Commerce was held last night. Present: The President (Mr. W, J. Penn), and Messrs D. K, Morrison, 11. Baily, M. Eraser, B. C. Hughes, T. Avery, F. 8. Johns, A. Goldwater, S, Shaw, D. Teed, junr., C. H. Burgess, 0. N. Filth, J. I). Sole, J. Clarke, J. Patou, and 11. Cocker. An apology for absence was received from Mr. Newton King. GOODS SIIED ACCOMMODATION. The President reported that several members of the Chamber had interviewed Mr. F. Waite, commercial agent of the Railway Department, and brought several matters before him. One of the principal questions dealt with was the matter of providing more accommodation at the railway yards for bondAl goods. Mr. Waite appeared to agree that there was congestion at the goods shed, and that this was likely to become greater when trade resumes normal proportions. But the deputation could not persuade hin\ that the Railway Depart' ment should provide accommodation for the use of the Customs Department. Mr. A. Goldwater pointed out that the scales at the goods shed registered incorrectly. He recently had occasion to have a case of 85lb weighed there, and on one scale the weight wa» given as 8711), on another SBlb, and on a third 021b. This affected consignors, and, further, the Railway Department received more than it was entitled to because of incorrect weights of ex* ports.

The President said the matter of the hond store would not he lo=t -sight of. thotgh they would proliahly have to wait some time before the work would he done. The complaint liiade- hy Mr. Ololdwater would he brought before tlio stationraastcr.

THE TOWN CLOCK'. Mr. Paton brought up the question of having the town clock chimes stopped at night. Ho said a gentleman had recently come to New Plymouth with the idea of staving a fortnight, hut a* he could not sleep at night,•> owing to the chimes, he left the town after a day or two. Wiinganni and other place* had stopped the clock chimes nt night, nnd Mr. Paton thought New Plymouth should not be behind other towns. Several speakers expressed opposition to the proposal, pointing out that tlw chimes rang in all the cities, and in some places there was more titan on# clock with chimes. Mr. Shaw moved that the next business should be proceeded with, and the discussion dropped. ! Other matters dealt with are reported elsewhere.
