AMUSEMENTS.
TEE EMPIRE. Riotous merriment pervades the Keystone Company's special two-reel comedy "Our Daredevil Chief," which heads the new programme introduced at the Empire Pictures last night. The principal part is taken by the popular comedian, Ford Sterling, whose amusing antics' compel laughter. As the village chief of police, he is allotted llie task of rounding up a gang of "crooks." At the same time the chief is courting the daughter of the mayor. His exploits in this direction are scarcely less ludicrous than his adventures with ithe 'crooks," There are several new laughter-provok-ing notions in this film which ensure its popularity. Arthur Johnson plays the title role in the Lubin Company's drama "The Life Line," which is away from the beaten track of photo-plays in plot and mountings, "The Topical Budget" shows many scenes of notable happenings in Europe, including new French recruits drilling, our wounded heroes, Bth Serbian Regiment on the march, etc. The Beauty Company's drama "The Haunting Memory" and .the Lubin comedy "The Actors' Boardinghouse" are pleasurable subjects also. ,
ROYAL PICTURES. Mary Pickford appears in ''How Mary Fixed It," a charming coincdy-draina, on to-morrow's new programme. The star film, "The Straight and Narrow Path" is a story that is full of powerful and pathetic situations. A manager of a clothing store endeavors to foist himself 011 one of the girl employees, but her inherent modesty prevents him from his unlawful designs. Chester Conklin and Mack Swuin as Walrus and Ambrose respectively cause a whole lot of fun in the new Keystone star comedy, "When Ambrose Dared Walrus." The latest Gazette is very attractive, "Departure of the Second Reinforcements" and "On the Stroke of Five" (drama) are the other films.
